Love Lasts Forever
It's hard to say what I think of "Philadelphia". I say to a lot of people that the better a film is, the less there is to say about it. The problem, as this film shows, is that simply that phrase doesn't work. This film is a powerful, moving, eye-opening experience which will leave even the most unemotional person with a tear in their eye at one point or another. It throws us into a world of pain and stark truth that is few and far between in mainstream cinema. AIDS is a reality and homophobia is a nasty truth that permeates in our world. Till now, there also many people who have a strong detestation of AIDS and homosexuals. I think everyone should have a look at this movie, for it tells us what love is and how to love.
What impress me most is the run through “love” in this movie.
The love is among families. Although they knew Andrew is a gay and had AIDS, they didn’t abandon him. However, in the time of the society has a strong detestation and discrimination of AIDS and homosexual, they still gave their love and support to Andrew. This love is surrounded Andrew all the time and made him have the coverage to make through his life. Remember, no matter what happened, the families will always wait there for you.
Love is also between the “lovers”. I do not know whether is suitable to call them “lovers”, because the gay love still unacceptable in this society. The love between them is so deeply and so “pure” that no one in this world can separate them. I think even some so called “normal” love cannot compare with theirs.
Philadelphia is called “city of brotherly love”. The brother love between Andrew and Joe is also moving. At first, Joe is a homophobia lawyer, however, when he had a deeper understanding of Andrew, he changed his mind and got to know another “world”.
And the love of Andrew himself is most powerful and affecting. His love of families, his love of lovers, his love of job and his love of life are so strong that can lead him to go on living. He is a gay, and he has AIDS, and because of these he was fired. However, they could not put off the fire in his mind. He knew he would dead soon, but he still insisted to prosecute his company. Because he wanted to show the world that he is a normal person and he should be loved as a normal person. And finally, he did it. Maybe the people still cannot accept him, but he won his own respect. He was dead in love, and left nothing to regret.
The last five minutes seem almost rushed, and it shows the segments of Andrew. When he was a boy, he was as native and happy as anyone else, and no one knew what would happen upon him. Everyone is born equal, and everyone has the right to be loved, no matter what kind person they are, no matter what color they are, and no matter what diseases they have.
Sometimes I think that I know
What love’s all about
And when I see the light
I know I’ll be all right
I’ve got m friends in the world
I had my friends
When we were boys and girls
And the secrets came unfurled
City of brotherly love
Place I call home
Don’t turn your back on me
I don’t want to be alone
Love lasts forever
Someone is talking to me
Calling my name
Tell my I’m not to blame
I won’t be ashamed of love
Philadelphia
City of brotherly love
Brotherly love
Sometimes I think that I know
What love’s all about
And when I see the light
I know I’ll be all right
Philadelphia
Yes, love lasts forever. No matter what happens, do not let your love go.
